Joan Englander is founder of Healing Companions® services, a holistic pioneering vision for eldercare. For twenty-eight years she has taught elders and nursing staffs, serving as a consultant and in-service trainer for geriatric care facilities in the California Central Coast region. She is a holistic eldercare coach. Her work is deeply informed by Jungian psychology and by her own spiritual experiences.
Ms. Englander sings by the bedside and offers poetry, storytelling, movement, inner reflection, Qigong, and chair dance in private sessions, for groups of elders, in retreat workshops for eldercare providers and for family and friends interested in becoming Healing Companions®.
Ms. Englander gives musical presentations at healing, retirement and retreat centers; Hospice, nursing, geriatric, home health care and ministerial associations; churches and synagogues. Her background includes extensive experience as a journalist and musician. For nearly two years she has traveled extensively in Egypt, India, and Israel, studying spiritual healing traditions.
In 1983 Ms. Englander attended an ecumenical gathering in Rome, where she had a private, life-transforming meeting with Mother Teresa. A series of cataclysmic experiences, including the death of a close friend and a serious injury, brought Ms. Englander face to face with her own suffering. The healing she received for her own losses profoundly influenced her groundbreaking work as a Healing Companion.
Currently, Ms Englander is a recipient of Today’s Caregiver Magazine 2008 Caregiver Friendly Award and a Living Treasure nominee in the community of Ojai. She is an oblate at the New Camaldoli Hermitage in Big Sur and resides in Ojai, California.
